The JCY-1700 Voyage Data Recorder is a “black box†data recording device that collects and stores data;
recording navigational information, bridge communications, VHF communications and Radar pictures.
The recorded data is used to analyse causes of an accident such as collision, grounding or sinking.
The data recorded includes:
- Date
- Time
- Ship's position
- Ship's speed
- Ship's heading
- On-bridge voice
- Radar videos
- VHF communications
- Water depth under keel
- Bridge alarm

The JCY-1700S is a simplified version of the popular JCY-1700 VDR;
it matches the proven capabilities of the JCY-1700 with a smaller lighter capsule.
This unit offers a cost-efficient solution for the marketplace.

Vessels requiring retrofit are:
- Cargo ships of 20,000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before July 1st 2002, at the first scheduled dry-docking after July 1st 2006 but not later than July 1st 2009;
- Cargo ships of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 20,000 gross tonnage constructed before July 1st 2002, at the first scheduled dry-docking after July 1st 2007 but not later than July 1st 2010.
