> Iridium Data Services
|
| Using your computer and an Iridium satellite phone, you can connect to the Internet
or a corporate network from virtually anywhere in the world, allowing you to browse
the web, send and receive e-mail and transfer files. You can configure your computer
for two different types of data calls, depending on your needs: Dial-Up Data or Direct Internet Data.
Iridium Data Services can be run on a computer using the Windows XP operating system
as well as Windows 95,98 Me, NT4.0 and 2000.
Dial Up Data
Dial Up Data Service provides dial-up connectivity from a PC, through your
Iridium phone to another computer, a corporate network/LAN or an Internet Service Provider(ISP).
This service offers a data rate of 2.4Kbps.
Direct Internet Data
Direct Internet Data Service provides connectivity from a PC, through your
Iridium phone, directly to the Internet through dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway.
This service utilizes transparent compression, resulting in a data rate of up to
10Kbps or more, depending on content.
Users with handsets purchased prior to April 2001 will need to return their
units to SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division for re-programming. This service will be available free of
charge to customers who take out a SIM card subscription with SELEX Communications Ltd. To take
advantage of data services a data kit is required incorporating the data adaptor, a stand for the handset, cable to
connect to the PC and all necessary software on CD-ROM.

Short Burst Data
Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) service is a new data service that
enables value-added applications to send and receive short data
transactions efficiently over the Iridium network.
Service Details
The Iridium Satellite network allows SBD to be offered on a global basis through a single network point of presence, subject to appropriate licensing and regulatory conditions. The basic architecture is illustrated in the diagram below:
SBD provides a new capability for market applications in the Oil, Gas, Rail, Maritime, Aeronautical, and Utility industries as well as applications in the Government and Military sectors.
Remote Applications send Mobile Originated SBD (MO-SBD) data messages via an Iridium 9522 L-Band Transceiver “LBT). The data message is transmitted across the Iridium satellite network utilizing inter-satellite links to reach the Iridium Gateway. From there the data message is transferred via e-mail to the users host computer system. Here the message is stored in a database for further data processing.
Mobile Terminated SBD (MT-SBD) messages are sent to the Iridium Gateway via e-mail from the Value Added Resellers (VAR) host computer system. MT-SBD data messages are delivered to the LBT following a MO-SBD or “mail-box check” initiated by the remote application.
The maximum length of a MO-SBD message is 1960 bytes. The maximum length of a MT-SBD message is 1890 bytes. Global network transmit latency for delivery of messages ranges from approximately 5 seconds for short messages to approximately 20 seconds for maximum length messages.
