es, the initial Iridium company was carrying the heavy costs of the system set-up, including satellite launches,
use of the network was expensive and whilst the number of users was growing the debts became too large and Iridium
went into voluntary bankruptcy.
What has happened since then?
Iridium LLC is a newly formed company, privately held by a group of international investors with telecommunications backgrounds,
who have acquired the assets of the previous Iridium network.
The newly formed company is now offering the end user a very affordable means of global communication.
Iridium LLC is well funded and financially stable.
What is SELEX Communications Ltd. involvement in Iridium?
SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division are a certified First Tier Service Provider for Iridium,
with a designated Iridium Product Manager and trained staff who can help with any enquires you may have.
SELEX Communications Ltd. have a long heritage in the supply and support of communication equipment and are well placed to support
the Iridium products and services.
Phone
Am I still able to use my old Iridium phone and SIM card?
You are able to use your old Iridium phone although you do need a new SIM card.
If you wish to use data services you will need to upgrade your software to the latest version.
This can be carried out by SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division.
Where can I use the Iridium telephone?
Iridium is a truly global system apart from Hungary, Poland, N.Korea and N.Sri Lanka where the service is switched off
at the request of those countries. The phone will work when the antenna has an unobstructed path to the satellite.
This can sound complicated, or inconvenient, but it is quite simple to locate the antenna outside while still being
able to use the phone from an indoor location.
The phone will also operate while you are on the move, on foot or in a vehicle, a vehicle mount antenna is available.
External fixed antennas are also available for use in buildings or in a marine environment.

How do I make a call from the Iridium System?
Originating a call from an Iridium satellite phone (does not matter where the satellite phone is located)
to a landline phone located in any country.
From the satellite phone, dial: 00 CC XXXXXX
00, for all outbound calls from satellite phone/CC, Country Code/XXXXXX, actual number.
Can I use the Iridium SIM card for cellular roaming?
No. Iridium is a satellite only system
Accessories for Kyocera Products
SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division can't provide any accessories as the Kyocera products are not being supported by anyone.
Although the old Kyocera handsets will continue to work through use of a new SIM card.
How do I activate my satellite phone I just brought?
To activate the handset you will require a SIM Card, which SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division can supply.
You will need to send a fax to the number shown below or send an e-mail confirming that you wish your
phone to be activated and include your SIM Card number.
Once received SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division will activate as soon as possible (usually within 20 minutes) and confirm in writing activation and phone number.
What about calling to Iridium from countries where direct dialing is not permitted?
Currently calling an Iridium handset may not be possible or may be expensive.
The situation varies from Country to Country depending on the carrier being used.
To overcome this short term problem SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division have access to a call router allowing
a call to be placed from any landline/mobile telephone/satellite telephone to your Iridium handset.
Please note this service is charged on a receiving party pays basis (just like roaming on a GSM phone).
In view of the nature of this service and the charges incurred by the handset owner, each handset must be registered on the system.
An application form is available from SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division on request.
Data Kit
What is included in the Data Kit?
Data Adapter - attaches to the portable phone and provides a connection for an RS232 serial cable.
Allows simultaneous connection of the AC Travel Charger, Auto Accessory Adapter or Solar Charger
RS232 Serial Cable (9-pin M/F) - Connects the Data Adapter to a computer serial port.
Stand - Supports the Portable phone and allows the antenna to be oriented in a vertical position.
Iridium World Data Services CD - contains all software and documentation required to install and configure
Iridium World Data Services on your computer. Documentation includes user guides, troubleshooting guides and application notes.

hat are the Data Capabilities?
Dial-Up Data Service provides dial-up connectivity from a PC, through your Iridium phone to another computer,
a corporate network/LAN or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This service uses a data rate of 2.4 Kbps.
Direct Internet Data Service provides connectivity from a PC, through your Iridium phone,
directly to the Internet through dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway. This service utilizes transparent compression,
resulting in an effective data rate of 10 Kbps or more, depending on content.
What Software is Iridium Compatible with?
Iridium data software is compatible with all Microsoft Windows(R) Operating Systems.
How can I download web pages quicker?
To improve data transfer rates, configure your browser to NOT download pictures, animation, and sound.
Can I still get text messages while on a data call?
Yes, you can still receive text messages while on a data call. The phone will provide an audio alert and then prompt you to read the message. This will not interrupt a data call or cause the loss of a connection.
How do I obtain updated versions of the Iridium Data software?
If software updates are released in the future, they will be available from
SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division.
Any items of the Data Kit sold separately?
Yes. The Iridium World Data Services CD is the only part of the Iridium Data Kit that is sold separately by Iridium at this time.
However, serial cables (9-pin, M/F) may be purchased at various retail stores.
Do I need a special Modem to make an Iridium data call?
No. The software on the Iridium World Data Services CD allows you to utilise your Iridium phone as a modem.
This CD is sold separately or packaged with the Iridium Data Kit.
Maritime Kit
Are Iridium World Data Services available for Maritime Units?
Yes. The Eurocom Iridium fixed mount unit is data capable and available from SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division.
Aviation
Are Iridium World Data Services available for aviation units?
Airsat 1 - No. Airsat 1 unit is not data capable.
Sattalk - Yes. This product is an accessory to the Motorola 9505 portable phone, and will support data as long
as the hardware/software requirements for 9505 phone are met.
Cabling
Cable prices depend on length of cable run. Prices for made up cables are in the pricelist.
Other lengths can be made up and pricing is available upon request.
Antennas
There are two antennas available
Fixed External antenna - on top of pole at 18mm-33mm diameter
Maritime external antenna - for mounting on a pole of diameter 12mm - 27mm using a separate mast mount kit.
Both antennas are marine rated

How can I buy equipment from SELEX Communications Ltd - Marine Division?
Purchasing a phone is easy, we can accept payment via Credit Card and we can despatch by courier to destinations worldwide.
We also require signature of our Standard Agreements

These can sent to us initially by fax, on the number shown below, with a cover sheet giving us authority to debit your Credit
Card for the appropriate amount in Sterling, with the originals to follow by Airmail / post.
Please note that we can zero rate for VAT purposes if delivery is outside of the European Community or
you have an European VAT number valid in another country and the equipment is to be delivered to that country.
VAT on airtime is zero rated as long as the user warrants that the equipment will be used outside of the European
Community and/or in a maritime environment outside of European waters.
In this case we will require a letterhead showing the VAT number to also be faxed to us.
Finally please note that we must send the equipment to the Cardholder address since this is the requirement of the Credit Card companies.
